The Not So Sweaty Gazette Volume 2

February 18, 2008

First off, I guess I need to introduce myself. As several of you wrote to me last issue, I never formally introduced myself. My name is Richard D'Ambrosio. I am a resident of Highland Mills, NY. I started running in 2001, after a long hiatus, and have graduated from barely being able to complete a mile on a treadmill at Straub's in Monroe, to currently training for my seventh marathon. Running has become an integral part of my life the last seven years, and it's kind of fun to be writing on it twice a month. I am married and have three children, 12, 8 and 4. I am the only who runs in our house, currently.

Like I said in the last edition, this newsletter is designed to help us all keep in touch, cheer each other on, help you achieve your goals and have a little fun along the way. Volume 1 was straight text, and as you can see now, we're graduating to HTML. I don't want to get too crazy, but hopefully a little style and organization will bring the newsletter to life. Items are bucketed into simple categories (look below) for simplicity. Where we can, we'll build in links to articles on line (see the NY Times story on running in the cold under Expand your Horizons), websites, local courses you can train on via MapMyRun.com, and other resources.

And I am still open to you contributing. Check out member Joe Marchesano's reading submission. So take a chance and submit a few sentences to us about..... So lace 'em up and get out there already.

Achieve your goals

ORC Member Scott Ziegler has a verylarge goal, and could use some help. He’s training for the San Diego Rock-n-Roll marathon, June 1, and become a Team in Training member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He would greatly appreciate our support, making a tax-deductible donation. Scott signed up to raise $3900 for LLS in support of research and patient care.  The easiest way to contribute is by going to Scott’s Team in Training webpage at http://www.active.com/donate/tntwhv/tntwhvSZiegle. Alternatively, by mail you can send a check made out to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to Scott Ziegler, 65 Deer Court Drive Middletown, NY 10940. If you have any comments or questions, e-mail Scott at spz27@yahoo.com . All donations must be received by April 21st.  From everyone at the ORC, congratulations Scott on stepping up to such a huge goal, for such a worthy cause. Let’s get out there and lend Scott a little support.

Expand your horizons

It's not easy running in Orange County during the winter, as I can attest. Heading out Monday, morning Jan 21 for an 8-10 miler with Todd Jennings, Bob Nordman, John Finnegan and Gary Arne, the thermometer read 12 degrees Fahrenheit -- before the wind chill. Somehow though we got through it, and even enjoyed ourselves for a few minutes. As the New York Times pointed out in an article on Jan. 17, 2008 , runners supply our own body heat, so don't let the winter hem you in.

Explore a new run. A bunch of us have tried this one, an abandoned rail line, that takes you north/south between the Heritage Trail and Blooming Grove. It is a very cool run. Click here. Crushed stone, flat. For some of you this may be your first time to MapMyRun.com.

Have some fun
