Looking at the calendar, you cannot help but smell the change in the air. Daylight Savings Time is here, albeit two weeks earlier than we usually expect it. More daylight for those track workouts and Heritage Trail tempo runs.
I can see my crocuses poking up through the somewhat still-frozen ground. So it won't be long before you can smell the lilacs along Smith Clove Road in Woodbury, and on Taylor Road over in Mountainville.
If that isn't enough to get you excited about running, then there's the new Orange Runners Club website. It is THE place to be on-line for all things running here in the picture perfect lower Hudson Valley. If you haven't take a tour yet, you are missing out. Check out the easy-to-use calendars for running and social events. There are photo galleries of ORC events and links to other sites like Fast Finishes, so you can check out your results and those of your peers.
Congratulations and deepest gratitude go out to Mark and Phil Melillo for the many hours they poured into revamping the website. With an eye to providing a great experience for members while lifting the visibility of the ORC, they truly made this a labor of love, and it shows.
So here's the request to you. This is our club, so it is our website (and may I make a pitch for our Not So Sweaty Gazette). If we aren't all active in providing content, helping update the site, etc., it will grow stale and its value will decline. Now you have a choice. You can read these words and hope that someone else will take a few minutes to contribute, and help improve or add value to the site for all of us, or you can take action and submit an idea or content to me, Phil or ORC president Todd Jennings.
So what are you waiting for? Sit down and compose your thoughts and share them with us. And after you have hit the send button, lace 'em up and get out there already!!! |

Next ORC 2008 Monthly Meeting
April 2, DeStefano's Olde Erie Pub, Middletown. Come meet David O'Neill, an area-resident who every year runs 363 miles along the Long Path, from the George Washington Bridge, to Albany. Trail running can be an interesting physical and spiritual diversion from road running. |

ORC Member and Hudson Valley Grand Prix most improved male John Monchak is thinking about exploring long distance running in 2008. Monchak, one of the toughest middle of the pack 10K runners I have had the privilege of hanging with, tells the NSSG that one of his goals this year is to run his first marathon. Good luck John. And if you need some help with those long slow distance training runs, let us know. We'll pair you up with an ORC peer.
If you think you might want to consider a marathon in 2008, check out Marathon Guide.com's feature on First Time Marathons for some remarkable first-person accounts. If these stories don't get you inspired, very little else will. |

At the ORC Monthly meeting last week we heard from Doreen Foxwell about the benefits of Yoga. About four years ago, I was re-introduced to Yoga by ORC members Joe Marchesano and Carolyn Negrycz. For about six months I was able to practice consistently, 2-3 times a week. The benefits were tremendous. I can honestly say that during that period, I arrived at every race in a better state of mind and body than at any other time in my running career. If you Google "Yoga and running" you will find about 951,000 references. Some of the highest listed links offer some pretty good advice. I highly recommend Yoga for anyone feeling that "runner's tightness." Namaste.

March Monthly Meeting
The ORC held a great meeting Wednesday, March 5 at DeStefano's Olde Erie Pub in Middletown. About 40 people showed up to listen to an update from the board about progress with the club website, membership and finances. We also welcomed a few new members, and met two area runners looking to possibly join the ORC. Club President Todd Jennings opened the meeting with a brief discussion about the importance of community to runners. We also enjoyed a yoga exercise courtesy of our guest speaker, Doreen Foxwell. If you haven't ever attended an ORC monthly meeting, or it has been a long time since you have stopped by, make a point in April to mark the date.

Inter-Club Challenge
On Sunday, March 9, the ORC held a fun and competitive event with the Sullivan Striders, Rockland Roadrunners and
Bronx Runners. About 40 runners from the ORC turned out. While the ORC didn't take back the Inter-Club Cup, a good time was had by all.
