Not So Sweaty Gazette

Volume 8, 2008

I am not a big fan of running in the summer. I admit it, proudly. Give me 25 degrees and no wind, and you will find me out in my all-season running shorts and two layers up top. But when the thermometer rises above 65 degrees, and the slightest hint of humidity crawls over my skin -- ugh.

No doubt, you can see the tangible impact of the summer on my race times. Take a look at me and the Goshen 10K, year over year. I ran a 49:42. The weather last year? it was around 60 degrees at start time and less than 50 percent humidity. This year? Temps were about 80 degrees during the race, with more than 50 percent humidity.

I have posted a link in the column to the right to a story written by NY Times reporter Gina Kolata. Kolata explores the science of weather and how it affects our bodies. Take a read.

One way to beat the heat is to slow down, intentionally. And with that in mind, I will inject a shameless plug for the upcoming ORC Walk Party. Talk about low pressure. This is an un-timed walk. Heat will not be a problem, so do yourself a summer favor. Get out on July 19 for a novel way of seeing your ORC friends while still beating the heat.

So what are you waiting for? Grab a water bottle, lace 'em up and get out there already!

Achieve your Goals

Calling all readers of the NSSG

The best feedback I have received about the newslettter this year typically arrives in my in-box when we include a story about an ORC member, something they have done, or something they are looking to do. So I am asking, imploring, dare say, begging, for some NSSG readers to e-mail me in the next two weeks with a quick note about the goals you have set for yourself this year, and how you are doing getting there.

Don't be afraid to admit that things aren't going so well. In fact, if you do, we may be able to help you by rallying your ORC friends behind you. If you're doing well in attaining your goals, let us know. Your experience may be able to help someone else, and after all, that is what this club is all about.

Expand your Horizons

Can you "Beat the Heat?"

Here we are. The thermometer is locked above 80 degrees most days, signalling the stepped up level of difficulty most of us face during the heart of the summer race season.

Have you ever wondered exactly what the science was around why we slow down in hotter, more humid weather? Gina Kolata at the New York Times takes us for a tour behind this runner's summer dilemma and debunks a couple of myths that might help you run faster and harder, no matter the heat index.

Have some Fun

A Long Running Joke

It's a long running joke (sorry for the bad pun) that we're a self-deprecating bunch. And I am always on the lookout for a good laugh. Trolling the web the other day, I stumbled on this page at the Tahoe Mountain Milers website. An ambitious humorist on the Tahoe team took the time to compile a lengthy list of running terms, redefined for the funny bone. Click here for a good chuckle. Then, when you have a second, send me your favorite funny definition of a running term and we'll post it in the next NSSG.
