Not So Sweaty Gazette

Volume 9, 2008

Can you believe it? Summer is over. But weren't July and August simply marvelous running months? In early July, I ran my fourth Boilermaker in Utica, NY, and had the pleasure of being able to personally thank Frank Shorter for his spending time with us the Friday night before the Classic 10K in June.I passed Shorter on the course at about mile 4, and noticed him because so many of the fans lining the course were calling out to him.

In late July I had the pleasure of running about seven miles in the beautiful Black Rock Forest preserve. If you can get over the climb up from the bottom parking lot, you are in for a special treat.

Covering 3400 acres of the Hudson Highlands just outside of downtown Cornwall, Black Rock has a mix of trails and old roads that can be mixed and matched for runs of varying lengths. Views along some of the roads and trails are spectacular. And all right here in our backyard. Some of us from the ORC will be heading up in late September, so please look for a notice and join us. With the change in leaf colors, it will be certain to please.

In early August, dozens of ORC members completed the Catskill Mountain Road Relay, a team event that is as much fun as running can get.

Connecting with other runners of like interests and abilities, is what club membership is all about. And meeting members with different interests might even expand your horizons a little. I hadn't run a team relay ever in my life until several ORC friends encouraged me to do so.

So I implore you. Come out to our next monthly meeting. Make some new friends. Put a name to a face you have been seeing on the race scene, even if you only see it briefly as it passes you a hundred yards from the finish line. ORC membership has its privileges. Take full advantage of it.

************

The Orange Runners Club is looking for potential speakers for the Monthly Meetings. So far this year, we have been entertained, educated and regaled by some truly interesting people. In March, we learned about the physical and mental benefits of yoga. In April, we heard about the Long Path and great ways to mix up your training and running regimen with local trail runs.

If you missed the August meeting (guilty as charged), you missed ORC member Bill Braine talk about how he has become a fairly regular contributor to Runner's World magazine. And he even read a piece or two for the attendees.

And who could forget Frank Shorter, Olympic Marathon Gold medalist, visiting with us for more than an hour during Classic 10K weekend? Not bad eh? The ORC rocks, and it is greatly due to the hard work from President Todd Jennings and his board. Thank you to all of the board members for your dedication.

So the question is: who would you like to hear speak at an upcoming Monthly Meeting? Let us know. Even if the name of a speaker doesn't come to mind, tell us about the subject matter, and we'll see if we can find the speaker.

So what are you waiting for? Lace 'em up and get out there already!!!

Run Philly?

The fall Marathon training season is upon us and many ORC members are preparing to put their minds and bodies through the challenge of training for 26.2 miles. A group of us are planning to run Philadelphia the second to last weekend of November. Others are training for New York City. If you're training for a fall marathon and you're looking for training run partners, let us know and we will hook you up with someone. If you want to head off to the race with friends, let us know.

Part of being an ORC member is that you are never alone, even with a lonely pursuit like chasing your marathon dreams.

Achieve your Goals

One of the most common goals amongst runners is trying to run faster than we ever have. Last month, during the Catskill Mountain Road Relay, ORC Member Joe Marchesano ran two 10K PRs. Here's a shout out from Carolyn Negrycz and all your friends at the ORC. Congratulations Joe!!!

Expand your Horizons

I have been reading a lot lately about a new book out from Haruki Murakami, a Japanese entrepreneur/club owner turned novelist. In "What I Talk About When I Talk About Running," Murakami writes about how running transformed his life by helping him focus on what he loves to do, and allowing him to leave everything else behind.

According to excerpts and reviews, running is both front and center in the book, and a backdrop in Murakami's life. For those of us with whom running is more of a lifestyle than a sport, it can be very easy to relate to Murakami.

Check out this blog summarizing the book.

Have Some Fun

Walk Tall

The ORC's second annual Walk Party was a resounding success. Held on July 19, in Fancher-Davidge Park, 67 people walked the 2.5-mile course. Live guitar music was provided by Sugar Loaf-based Sarah Mohr. And if that wasn't enough, a hearty breakfast was served courtesy of the finest group of volunteers ever to sling hash.

Running is Cool, Guest Author

ORC member Joe Pfanzelter read a piece I wrote for the most recent Sweat Gazette and mused further about the coolness of running. We are honored to publish his thoughts here in the NSSG. Thanks Joe for taking the time to put your thoughts down so eloquently.

I enjoyed your article in The Sweat Gazette, "Staying Motivated."  Thanks for reminding me why I run.  Not that I needed reminding, but it is always nice to hear from someone else who feels the same way.

I too am not "trying to run away from the past" or "conquer the little fat kid" and I'm not even "running from the future".  I just enjoy running.  When I run in places like Black Rock Forest or in Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC or along a Farm to Market road in Texas, I get a deep feeling of serenity that I don't get doing other things.  I don't race much any more, a half-marathon, a 10K and a ten miler every year, but I've run races in which I've achieved that "runners high" that a non-runner will never understand.  And even though I know I'm not fast enough to win, I know that the enjoyment I will get from just running will be enough.

I too have run through the heart of London early in the morning; I've run in Berlin, Frankfurt and many other places in Germany; I've run in Spain; and I've run all over the US.  I make it a point to run everywhere I travel just so I can say, "yeah, I've run there, its cool."
